Does it "open at the close"?

No it doesn't open. I love mine....

Hello. do you think this would break easily if used as a keychain? the wings look fragile to me and i'm afraid they would break off. thoughts?

They are not as fragile as the picture looks. They seem pretty solid, better than I expected. With heavy use though, in and out of pockets, etc. I think one or both would eventually break off. Best used as a decoration or for fun as a keychain with the understanding that you might need a new keychain in a few months.

If you hook the snitch to the zipper part of a jacket, is it so heavy that the zipper would come undone if it's zipped up?

That kind of depends on the zipper. If it's a heavy duty zipper like on a Carhartt it would be fine. If it's a real fine zipper with small teeth it might pull it down

How large is the ball part of the snitch?

The ball is about an inch and a half and with the wings it's about 4-5 inches
