According to the information provided by Apple’s official website, Jaguar xe only supports 2019 and later models. To facilitate your confirmation, you can connect your phone to your car via a data cable to see if it supports using the carpaly app in a wired situation. If so, your car will also be adapted to the wireless carplay adapter.

do ou have to plug it in every time or can you leave it in and it starts automatically when you start the car?

Keep the dongle plugged into the car, and it will automatically connect every time you start the car.
