is ther a zipper in back and can it be placed underseat on plane?

It is a very heavy leather. It's true it doesn't quite smell like the leather shop (Wilson's) at the mall, it's not that offensive. My biggest complaint is the cheap quality of the zipper. It's the absolutely lowest quality that could have been used. Some animal gave his life (I'm not a tree hugger, and love meat) for a nice heavy piece leather and then they use such a cheap zipper.

Is it made of bison leather or water buffalo?

Buffalo leather and it's a beautiful duffel bag. Very nice size. Great for a trip and enough room for everything you need for a few nights stay and more.

Is the strap leather?

The shoulder strap is a heavy-duty woven strap with stitched genuine leather trim. The section that sits on the shoulder is all leather. This is a beautiful, rustic buffalo leather bag!
