This hardy variety is incredibly strong growing and productive. It produces thick, long, green and purple crops which can be harvested in late spring and early summer. Asparagus Officinalis 'Martha Washington' is lovely when eaten fresh from the garden, but it has good storage potential and can be frozen after picking. Asparagus crops takes a few years to establish and require a little maintenance and experience. It produces up to 25 crops per year and has the potential to produce spears for around 25 years! Direct sow asparagus seed outdoors in mid spring in a well prepared seed bed. Choose a sheltered position in full sun. Asparagus beds should be richly fertile and well drained.
