Works great, high capacity, stable

My needs are a little different from most people's. I make a quart of coffee every morning using a French press, then pour it into a steel Thermos to take to work. Tastes great and saves money! But I'm tired of the coffee sludge in the bottom of my cup that the press doesn't filter out, and also I have read recently that unfiltered coffee may contain bad stuff.Anyway, so I got this cone, plus a pack of #6 filters, and have been very pleased with its performance. I pour the entire contents of the French press (about 34 ounces) into the cone at once and let it filter into the Thermos. It does clog up after a few minutes, and what I've discovered works the best is to lift the entire paper and rotate it about 45 degrees, so that the crease at the bottom is no longer fitting snugly into the cone. The coffee then finishes filtering rather quickly, and I get the pleasure of discarding this filter which is coated with this black residue of grounds.I couldn't be more happy. Well, I could be--it could be a ceramic cone, to avoid ingesting any more plastic than I have to! But that's for next Christmas, perhaps. The good:- fits snugly and stably into top of a narrow-mouth thermos- high capacity, will make a quart of coffee easily (the markings say 6 cups but I haven't tried that much)- easily cleaned- inexpensive, and will pay for itself after a few days of not buying your coffee at the coffeeshopThe bad:- none that I have noticed so far. It just works.

Works great -- important how-to-use detail

Every coffee making device in my house broke recently -- the glass on the french press, the electric percolator, etc. I decided to buy this cone holder for a thermos carafe I have that has a flip-up lid. I wasnt sure if this would work, but it does, and the lid is not in the way. It's a close call, but it does fit. I'm pleased with the way it drips, I dont find it too slow. The unit also is bigger than I envisioned. Right now I'm using up a pack of Bunn filters that arent even meant for this type of filter holder, but I can make do. After this, I'll get the tallest cone filters, and that should make this whole arrangement Sweet! This was kind of expensive with the expedited shipping, over $17, but I am glad to have it, coffee tastes great, and I think it will work well with another carafe I had forgotten I had. It's a sturdy item, too -- should last indefinitely.UPDATE SIX MONTHS LATER: The reason some people had trouble with this isnt because of the one hole, it's because the paper filter sticks to the walls of the plastic cone after water is poured in, thus creating a vacuum seal. If you gently tug on the edge of the paper filter and release that seal, the coffee flows Very Fast out the one hole. The best way to use this product is with #6 cone filters because you can fill the cone with hot water all the way to the brim. #4's also work, but if you get the #6's, you'll be glad you did. I finally bought a case of them through one of the Amazon vendors, and the results are just great. No slow dripping, perfect coffee every morning. After I discovered the technique of tugging the paper filter slightly, that made this product work like a charm. So don't contemplate drilling any extra holes -- the one hole is enough. I love it this set-up. (PS -- You could use one of the gold mesh filters, and probably have no problem with slow dripping because no seal can be formed due to the rigid frame of that style filter.)UPDATE OCTOBER 2012: Still love it! Dropped on tile floor several times, it bounced but didnt break. Drip coffee is a beautiful thing.UPDATE FEBRUARY 2013: Original still going strong, still making terrific coffee. I did buy a burr grinder about a month ago, from Amazon -- it's the Baratza Encore. And I also bought the Cuisinart electric kettle, which looks a lot like a tall coffee pot. I like that hot water source much better than kettle on the gas stove. Faster -- which is good, because coffee in the morning, fast, is a requirement, in my opinion.

Great filter...

I've used the Melitta pour over coffee maker for a long time, have tried all other methods but it is the best. I wanted to find another carafe that can be put on the stove to keep the coffee hot or reheat it, but I couldn't find one the Melitta plastic filter would fit into. So I bought a $10 glass "Whistling Kettle" at Bed Bath and Beyond and after making coffee in the Melitta carafe, I just pour the rest of the coffee into the glass kettle on the stove. It works great, just have to rinse out two carafes, no big deal. However, the RSVP Filter fits into the glass Whistling Kettle carafe, so now I can just make and heat coffee in the same carafe, so great! It isn't really stable because it's just sitting "in" the top of the carafe, although I think it would be stable "enough" from the weight of water... BUT I made a little platform from foam board with a hole in the center to sit on top of the carafe to stabilize it all, and it works great! Just took a minute, I cut a 4 inch square out of 1/4 inch thick foam core board, then cut a hole in the center about 1/2 inch wider than the bottom of the filter, so I can put that little platform on top of the carafe to hold the filter in, and it's perfect! It is 100% stable! People probably wonder why I would go to such trouble, but it was very easy to do, and it's great to drip the coffee directly into a pot I can put on the stove!

Good filter cone...

Very nice. Well-made, sturdy. I really like it. It has one drip hole and is easy to clean. It accepts Number 6 paper filters and smaller. The only improvement I would recommend would be for the manufacturer to increase the diameter of the stabilizing disk that sits on the the edge of the thermos or carafe...for the sake of versatility.I purchased this cone for use with a large, insulated carafe that has a wide opening. The flat "disk" that is designed to hold the cone on the top edge of the thermos or carafe is narrow. It works well for a narrow-mouthed thermos, but not too well for wider openings. I solved this little problem by cutting a hole in the center of a cottage cheese lid, and then sliding the lid onto the cylinder end of the filter. Works beautifully! The cone sits on the top rim of my carafe, as it should. (FYI: The carafe I bought: SDREAM 68 0z Coffee Carafe Stainless Steel Insulated)
